Tourist Information about Aars

Aars

Aars means an oasis, and on walks around the town you will encounter many unforgettable things. Among other things you will see art of international format, and you will sens the intense atmosphere of the local shopping street, which was recently renovated. Service is a keyword here in Aars, and all year round there is a swirl of activities to suit all ages. As a contrast to the modern shopping centre of Aars other parts of the council offer unique nature and rustic village life.

The art in Aars has become famous all over the country and also beyond its boarders. On a stroll down the main shopping street you will meet art made by such prominent artists as Per Kirkeby and Kirsten Ortwed, among others.

Per Kirkeby: was born in 1938. In the early sixties he was admitted to the Experimentary School of Arts in Copenhagen which was established as an alternative the Academy of Fine Arts. Simultanesously he was studying geology at the University of Copenhagen. In 1980 The Danish State Art Foundation entrusted him with the commission of decorating Vesthimmerlands Gymnasium in Aars, with a large oilpainting. That was to be the beginning of a sustained cooperation with this institution. In 1985 he created a brick sculpture in the shape of a cross in front of the school. This was to be the first of a number of brick sculptures at the school. During the following six years a park of scultures emerged behind the gymnasium. In spring 1995 a 34 m long and 5 m tall brick sculpture wall, paid by local, private sponsors was built at the Kimbrertorv right in the centre of Aars. Since 1981 Per Kirkeby has arranged exhibitions at Himmerlands Museum of Art.

Not only can you find mastrodonte sculptures and worldfamous artists in Aars. You can also find galleries and craft shops which takes you into a world of colour and inspiration that caters everyone.

The Gundestrup Cauldron is one of the central finds from European Iron Age, measuring two metres in circumference and adorned with thirteen puzzling plates depicting gods and myths .
