Tourist Information about Accrington

Accrington

Accrington is a small industrial town with a population of around 35,000 in East Lancashire. It is one of the areas which now make up the borough of Hyndburn. It is said that Accrington got its name from the fact that it was once ringed by mighty Oak trees (Oak-ring-town). The town dates back to Saxon times with its oldest building being St James Church, parts of which hail from the 16th Century. Perhaps its most prominent landmark is the stone railway viaduct the dominates the town centre, the Town Hall and Market Hall. Accrington town centre has changed substantially in recent years, with the arrival of new shopping precincts in an attempt to lure shoppers from the surrounding larger centres of Blackburn and Burnley. The Lancashire hills and moorlands are on the doorstep with plenty of history within, including the likes of Pendle Hill and the tales of witchcraft surrounding it.
