Almyrida is a small fishing village 25 kms east of the town of Hania. Picturesque villages nearby, good beaches and a good climate make it a favourite summer holiday resort. Nature lovers can visit the Dictamo Gorge and the Gorge of saint Nickolas as well as many natural caves scattered in the area. A few years ago an important Early Byzantine three aisled basilica with a transept was excavated. It is T?shaped in plan and has a projecting apse. The bases of the high altar and pulpit have been found and various architectural members: a Corinthian capital, closure panels, etc. The basilica is dated to the 5th-6th c. The nave and altar have fine mosaic floors depicting various themes: crosses and stars, circles and squares, rosettes and wheels, guilloches and shoots in red, brown, blue grey and white. Their quality and subject matter make them unique in Crete.
