The town was a stronghold in the former province of Picardy. The houses are constructed in tight ranks around the famous royal forteress and the church which is dedicated to Our Lady of Grace of Ardres. Ardres is sourrounded by woodlands. Fisherman will greatly appreciate the lake and canal reputed to be rich with fish. The marina is also ideal for sailing dingy, wind surfing and canooing enthusiasts.
