Located at the junction of the Barley and the Seine, on both sides of the Trunk road 7 to 12 km of Paris, Athis-Mons is a commune of the department of the Essonne, district of Palaiseau, chief town of Canton.
With ttégia then Athis-on-Barley and finally Athis-Mons: here quite long and remote history. They are the incursions of Norman, in IXe century, which them first reveal the existence of Athis in the texts. It seems besides that the village answered in this time the Latin name "Attégia" indicating the huts of branches which sheltered the first inhabitants.
With the paddle of feudality, Athis remained still a quite modest village. With Xe century, the Mons-on-Barley village appears in its turn in the documents of files. Hugues Capet and his son Robert the Piles then confirm the donation made with the abbey of Saint-Magloire "of a ground in Mons, where grows a prolific vineyard".
In the 1140 royal abbey of Saint-Victor melts a priory and makes raise a church, devoted to Saint-Denis, and which makes today still the pride of Athis-Mons with its Romance bell-tower of XIIème century. Two centuries later, in 1305, Athis enters the French history. It is Ci which is signed between the envoys of the Count de Flandres and those of king Philippe Beautiful the "treaty of iniquity", which, envenimant the Free-Flemish relations, the One hundred Year old announces War.
Between 1898 and 1939, Athis-Mons sees its population growing quickly (of 1600 with more than 10 000 inhabitants) and knows a strong urbanization. On a side, the agricultural world rather anchored on the plate yields the place to the popular allotments. Other, a working world enters the Quay of the Barley and significant Quai of Industry. Lastly, the country houses on the slope, in Mons especially, accomodate Parisian Sunday and the summer. But this movement of construction and expansion, slowed down by Large Depression, is destroyed on April 18, 1944: 45 min. of bombardments leave 300 dead, nearly 4000 disaster victims and to the debris clusters in the Valley. It is necessary to almost entirely rebuild this district... and to build new residences in series (the F.F.F., 1450 residences between 1958 and 1962, the city Mozart, Fields, Edouard Vaillant…). The population will exceed the 30 000 inhabitants in the years 1970.
