Bagnolet France

Bagnolet is a distant commune of Seine-Saint-Denis of 6 km approximately of the square of Our-Lady. It is bordered in north by the Lilacs and Romainville, in the east by Romainville and Montreuil, in the south by Montreuil and finally, in the west, by the XXe district of Paris, which gathers the old villages of Charonne, Belleville and Ménilmontant. Its current surface is 257 ha.

The commune occupies a valley directed of north in the south, parallel with the edge of Paris, framed by the hills of Belleville and the Lilacs, and by the plate of Malassis. Sheltered winds and shone upon well by its opening to the south, the village profits from conditions favorable to the exploitation from the vine, which will constitute a long time a significant share of its activity, and with the blooming of the market gardenings, fruit-bearing and horticultural, which will gradually replace it as from the XVIIIe century. Until the end of the XIXe century, Bagnolet will be presented in the form of an agricultural village at the doors of Paris, a garden where the inhabitants of the capital will like to stroll Sunday in family.

The etymology of Bagnolet is not established with certainty. The name could be derived from balneolum , pointing out the presence of water, ponds, marshes (valleys), or bannus , which means round of applause, margin of jurisdiction, and which gave the word suburbs.
