Tourist Information about Barcaldine

Barcaldine is situated at the crossroad of the highways and byways in central western Queensland and is an hour east of Longreach and the Stockman's Hall of Fame. The Town was established in 1886 with the arrival of the central railway line. The Town has a rich history with the first free flowing bore in 1886, the initial meeting of the CSN Graziers Association in 1889, and the central meeting place of the Great Shearers Strike of 1891. The dispute resulted in the formation of the Australian Labour Party. The Tree of Knowledge, a ghost gum next to the railway station, was the meeting place for the strikers and landscaped gardens now stand around the tree. In 1991, 100 years on, the opening of the Workers Heritage Centre became a tribute to the working men and women of Australia. This Centre now houses many old historic buildings and continues to preserve the past and provide a vision for Australia's future.
