The foundation of Barueri retraces to the time of the jesuíticas missions, in middle of century XVI. according to historians the origin of the city was the aldeamento of "Baruery", established in 11 of November of 1560 for the priest Jose de Anchieta, whoit raised in the right of the river Tietê, little above of the confluence with the River Barueri Mirim, the Chapel of Ours Lady of Stairs, today padroeira edge of the city. The Barueri name, according to some scholars, means in aboriginal language, "Red Flower that Enchants", a alusão to some species of flowers that grew in the edges of the river.
The village of Baruery grew quickly, becoming one of the most important aldeamentos of indians of Brazil colony. Resisting bravely, with the aid of the Jesuit priests, to the frequent attacks of bandeirantes that went down the river Tietê in direction to the interior, imprisoning indians for enslaved man power, the village obtained to survive. The economic development of Barueri gained force from 1973, when the City council approved the Law of Industrial Zoning that allowed the sprouting of enterprise polar regions as of Alphaville, Tamboré and California Garden and, more recently the Industrial District of the Votupóca.
