Administrative capital of the Archipelago. After the Arawak and Carib Indians, settled by the Spanish, English and at last the French. Founded in 1643, she has been an important city over a long period, but since lost her influence. First as a port to Pointe-à-Pitre whoes port is bigger and easier to access, then in 1976, when the inhabitants had to evacuate in view of a possible eruption of the vulcano, La Soufrière and many never came back.
