Berkhamsted is an elegant town, some of it protected as a conservation area. The town is situated on the Grand Union Canal and also on the River Bulbourne which runs alongside the canal. The town centre has a street market every Saturday.
Consider visiting Berkhamsted Castle, a few hundred metres away from the train station. You can view the remains of this romantic Norman motte and bailey castle, with its unique double moat. The castle is run by English Heritage and open all year round.
North of Berkhamsted lies beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, such as Berkhamsted Common and the Ashridge Estate, run by the National Trust. The world-renowned Ashridge Management College is based within Ashridge Estate.
You can visit and purchase wines from one of Hertfordshire's vineyards, Frithsden Vines, just a few miles North of Berkhamsted.
Not to be confused with Little Berkhampstead which is situated 20 miles east of Berkhamsted.
