Tourist Information about Cambara Do Sul

Cambara Do Sul

It’s the point of departure of visits to two important national parks on Rio Grande do Sul: Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, containing surprising rocky formations. These places are for long hikes and observation of impressive pictures of cliffs, big walls and canions, as Itaimbezinho and Fortaleza, deep cracks on plateau with kilometers length.

Cambará do Sul is on the Campos de Cima da Serra region, a plateau with high altitudes, with predominant pasture. On the farms adapted for rural tourism, visitor can be in contact with gaúchos cultural environment. On a mountainous region, during the wintertime, temperatures are negative and there can be snow. On summer afternoons, the hot winds from coastline produce the zephyr, a dense fog that covers the fields and the cities on the region.

The national parks Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral, although separated by names, are near and have the same kind of geological environment, prevailing long canions formed by rocky big walls. However, Aparados has a good infrastructure to visitations, but the Serra Geral park doesn’t have it yet. On the two areas, there are a lot of trails, also inside canions, with very beautiful views of the formations. The harder hikes require the presence of a specialized guide. On Aparados, is the famous canion Itaimbezinho, more than 700 meters deep that can be observed from lookouts. On Serra Geral, one of the more extraordinary places is the Fortaleza canion, 900 meters deep and one and a half kilometer large.

Farms and sites owners on Cambará do Sul host tourists to accommodation. The inns are simple and keep the typical environment of residences on Campos de Cima da Serra. They offer rides, warmth fireplaces and homemade breakfasts.

Besides the hotels on farms, there are simple inns on the Cambará do Sul urban area. Restaurants serve the traditional gaúcho barbecue. On Parque Nacional de Aparados da Serra (Aparados da Serra National Park), visitors can hire tourism guides to accomplish them on the hikes.

Cambará do Sul is 190 km far from Porto Alegre, by the road RS-020 (from the road BR-101). To those going from other states, it’s possible to come to the region by roads originating on the roads BR-101 and BR-116, on Rio Grande do Sul. Buses to the city depart regularly from the capital.
