The stretch of the Carretera Austral joining Puerto Montt and Chaltén was inaugurated in 1988. It is a well kept pebble road through thick forests of larches and colihues, supported by thin soils and fragile ecosystems, where you must be very careful with fire. When you get near the city, you will have the opportunity to appreciate different images of Bahía del Chaitén. The village is situated on the shore, and from its port it communicates with Chiloé and Puerto Montt, where you will also appreciate the imposing image of Corcovado Volcano.
