Though just 10km west of San José, the tranquil and cozy suburb of Escazú seems worlds apart in character. Rolling hills and greenery take the place of the capital's towering buildings and grimy air, enticing increasing numbers of retired Americans and Europeans who want both the serenity of a small town and convenience of being near the city. Though the town center is simple with a classic colonial feel, the lush green hills on the outskirts hide some fantastically relaxing and luxurious bed and breakfasts, while some of San José's classiest restaurants are scattered along the road to San Rafael de Escazú, 1km northeast.
