The largest baroque temple in Guatemala is to be found in Esquipulas, a center of continental pilgrimage where the Black Christ is venerated. The famous sculptor of the 16th Century, Quirio Cataņo, carved the image which is today venerated by thousands of persons in Guatemala, Mexico an Central America. The route to Esquipulas also leads to other places where beautiful churches were built in the Colonial period, such as San Agustin and San Cristobal Acasaguastlan in El Progreso or Jocotan and Quetzaltepeque in Chiquimula.
