Founded in 1531 on the banks of the Oro river, only 9 Km. ( 5 miles ) from Bucaramanga. "La Villa de los caballeros de San Juan de Girón" was the settlement of the rich colonists and an important administrative and religious site. Here was born Eloy Valenzuela, second in command in the Expedición Botánica. La Cathedral del Señor de los Milagros, the atrium of which is constructed in stone has been integrated into the plaza of what is now the Museo de Arte Religioso. The half dozen arched bridges and many other constructions of the region are a pleasure to the eyes and an open history book. The Capilla de las Nieves, the Mansión del Frayle, the Casa de los Nazarenos, the Casa Consistorial and the Casa de la Cultura, where frequent cultural events take place, are main attractions in Girón. Girón is also the place for delicious sweets and a center for handicrafts. The hotels, the Casona and the Mesón del Frayle, give you an unforgettable stay in the same patios and chambers where the Liberator walked. In the surrounding area, on the way to, Bucaramanga or in route to Zapatoca, you can admire the unusual formations caused by wind erosion.
