Tourist Information about Ijevan

Ijevan is the administrative, economic, religious and cultural center of Tavush marz. Known as Karvansara until 1919, Ijevan received the official status as a city in 1961. It is a garden-city nestled in the valley of the river Aghstev. At 650-850m above sea level, Ijevan is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in Armenia, in large part because of its lush forests with big-leaf trees, not to mention the associated flora, fauna, and natural cold springs. Ijevan is similarly rich in its historical-cultural monuments. It is located 140km northeast of Yerevan and is home to a population of about 21,000.

rom north to south the city’s length is 3km, from east to west the average width is 1.5km, encompassing an administrative area of 462 hectares. Ijevan was once a powerful industrial center and a center of commerce as evidenced by the city’s railway station. Presently plans are underway to rejuvenate Ijevan’s carpet-making and wood-processing industries as well as reopen the mechanical plant. The food processing industry and the “Ijevan"? mineral water plant are already functioning, and the high quality wines from the local vineyards enjoy growing demand in Europe and the USA. Given its legacy as a regional industrial center, the residents of Ijevan can boast a highly qualified workforce as well.

The city has moderate climate, with an average temperature in January of 0 C and in July of 21.3 C; the annual rainfall is 563 mm. In 1991 Ijevan received an official status as a health resort city. Ijevan is famous for its traditional warm hospitality of its inhabitants and beautiful natural sights of the region. It is a city full of undiscovered opportunities for tourism.
