The island of the Corota, which covers 8 hectares, is in the Laguna de la Cocha 28 kilometers ( about 15 miles ) from Pasto, the capital of the state of Nariņo; at an altitude of 2,830 meters above sea level ( about 9,000 feet above sea level ) and with an average temperature of 11 degrees centigrade (52 degrees Fahrenheit). The vegetation corresponds to the primary rain forest and the fauna is rich in frogs, small rodents and aquatic birds. The Laguna de la Cocha, the largest lake in the country, offers visitors the opportunity to sail on its tranquil waters and fish, except when it is out of season. The island can be crossed in 20 minutes walking on a beautiful ecological path. There are two comfortable and pleasant hotels with good restaurants which offer a plan for a real vacation: enjoying the scenery, reading by a beckoning fireplace, and good rainbow trout.
