Tourist Information about Kadan

Kadaň was founded by Poemysl Otakar II in the 13th century. The most significant sights have been preserved since the Middle Ages, among them a Gothic castle, a part of a Gothic fortification with a huge barbican in front of the Žatecká´s Gate and the Gothic town hall with an imposing chapel and a high tower from the 14th-15th centuries, which was completed with a rare brick casque. The square is decorated with Baroque facades on old houses. You can find a Baroque pestilential column here as well. The unique, late Gothic Franciscan Monastery is located at a foot-hills of the Strážišti mountain. A significant set of mural paintings from the domain of Lucas Cranach, is locked up in the Monastery Church.
