This significant royal city is an example of mature medieval urbanism from the 13th century with regular layout of streets and a square. The St. Bartholomew´s Parish Cathedral is an outstanding work of local Gothic architecture. Petr Parléo built the high cathedral choir between the years 1360-78. Late Baroque citizen houses on the square and a rare Baroque synagogue in the former Jewish ghetto in the western outskirts, belong to the significant sights from the later period. The town is famous especially for its traditional festival of woodwind music known as Kmoch´s Kolín.
