Tourist Information about Maun

Maun

This small town on the edge of the Okavango Delta holds little of interest. Few visitors go beyond the souvenir stalls outside the airport gates before they board the five-seat connecting flights to Okavango Delta, Moremi Reserve or Kalahari Desert destinations. These flights are a great introduction to what's to come - the pilot usually flies low enough so that you can pick out huge elephant herds or, occasionally, a large antelope dashing through the brush. If you're unable to afford a stay at one of the Moremi Reserve camps, you can get a taste of the delta experience from Maun. Boats and guides can be hired to go up the Thamalakane River for single-day or several-day trips, camping along the bank as you go. (You might also be able to join a "mobile safari," which overnights at Moremi Reserve's public camping sites.) Fishing safaris for the powerful, piranha-like African Tigerfish, one of the world's most sought-after game fish, can also be arranged through agents in Maun. On the outskirts of town are Maun's only "attractions," the Okavango Swamps Crocodile Farm and the Borobonche Ostrich Farm. 355 mi/575 km northwest of Gaborone.
