Tourist Information about Mompox

Few cities in Colombia, and even in the Américas, have the qualities of Mompox. This is a colonial architectural jewel that is frozen in time. It was one of the first cities founded by the Spanish. Mompox, is located on a large island formed by the Magdalena river. For more than three hundred years it was an important stopover on the only trade route between the coast and the inland cities. The city running along the river is outstanding for its special architecture where is mixed the typical Spanish colonial characteristics and the liberties taken by the local builders to adapt them to the tropical climate. Of particular interest is the decorative ironwork on the windows and doors. Mompox is equally well-known for its gold filigree and for its valuable religious artifacts passed down from generation to generation and only shown during the Holy Week celebrations. The local handicrafts and hand-woven wicker rocking chairs are particularly beautiful. The cemetery mausoleums are good examples of the colonial architecture. Mompox can be reached by air or by land from Barranquilla or Cartagena.
