Papeete, the capital of Tahiti and Her Islands, is laid out around the waterfront and has many small shops stretching from the business end of town, past the Market and to the center of town. "Le Vaima", opposite the VIP wharf is the largest commercial complex in the country, having 3 levels, 85 small boutiques and specialized shops, restaurants, bars, travel agencies, book stores, banks, movie theaters and more.
Not to be missed : the visit of To’ata Square, which is at Paofai near the Western Route out of Papeete. Cooled by the tradewinds and just across from Papeete Harbor, the place extends over more than 2 hectares. The esplanade has two roles: as a friendly place to stroll amongst the flowers and ideal for families, the place is open to the public 24 hours a day; and as a showground that has hosted the singers and dancers of the traditional "Heiva" festival since July 2000
