This town is located in the state of Santander and is famous for its Parque del Gallineral, which is filled with amazing natural beauty situated on an island in the Fonce river. This beautiful garden is crisscrossed by myriad creeks and its tall gallineros trees are decorated with Spanish moss. Other places of interest are the Pozo Azul and a large number of caves on the outskirts of town such as La Antigua and El Alumbre. Lately, San Gil has become a favorite place for white water rafting enthusiasts which is practiced on the Fonce and Chicamocha rivers. This is one of the most exciting forms of adventure tourism. This sport consists of navigating swift rivers filled with swirling currents and threatening rapids in an inflatable raft, a canoe or a kayak. At the Parque del Gallineral you can make arrangements for different excursions which may include a day of canoeing and picnic lunches along the banks of the river. San Gil may be reached by air to Bucaramanga and from there by a two hour road trip.
