In Sandvig you are close to the top of Bornholm. Hammerknuden cliff pushes itself with massive forces out in the sea north-west of Sandvig. Between Hammerknuden and the old fishing hamlet you find the sandy cove, which has given name to Sandvig. Here, you find a very nice beach and the nice swimming baths, Bølgebadet too.
Enjoy the quiet atmosphere with the cosy fishing environment at the harbour of Sandvig. Enjoy the view to the bay and Hammerknuden cliff. The big old hotels around the harbour are part of the cosy environment.
The beach is situated beautifully in the bay between the cliffs at the esplanade Strandpromenaden and Hammerknuden and it is very popular. On a warm summer evening, the hotels of Sandvig, the old town, the beach and the cliffs could remind you of the small towns in the Mediterranean. And if the weather or the water temperature is not as good as in the Mediterranean, Bølgebadet swimming baths make sure that you can get into the water. You can choose between many restaurants, cafés and confectioner’s shops in the centre of Sandvig. Several of these are situated in the fine old houses of the town.
If you want to go camping you find the camping site just behind the beach with a nice view to the bay. You can also stay at the youth hostel Sjøljan, which you find on your way to the castle ruins Hammershus.
The long terrace houses on Hammershusvej and Sandlinien were built in 1890 as residences for the stone workers on Hammeren Granite Works. Here, the hard working people lived, who turned stones into bread. The quarrying is now stopped and has left an amazing and dramatic landscape with steep vertical granite surfaces and the lakes Opalsøen and Krystalsøen.
A walk around Hammerknuden is a must. Go between the round scored cliffs, smell the heather and juniper berries, feel the wind from the sea and listen to the waves breaking against the cliffs. In the cliff valleys you can find sloe, roses and spinney, which give shelter to sheep and goats. And the animals help keeping the stand under control.
In a height of 91 metres, on top of Hammerknuden, you find the oldest lighthouse Hammer Fyr, from 1872. In 1895, Hammerodde lighthouse was built on the northernmost point of Hammerknuden. From here, all the lighthouses of Bornholm are managed electronically while the Hammer Fyr is no longer in use.
On your walk around Hammerknuden you suddenly see a small cove on the ruins of Salomons Chapel. The small church was built in the 14th century as many people came to the island in order to get a share of the “herring adventure” of the Baltic.
Right south of Hammerknuden you find the special Hammer Harbour, which originally was a place of call for Hammershus. The harbour was established in 1891 to disembark granite from the Hammer Works and it served as this until 1974. There are only a few houses at the harbour, a small beach and a boat bridge from where you can take the small boats of Hammerhavnens Bådfart on exciting trips along the rocky coast at the foot of Hammershus. If the sea is quiet you sail into the narrow rock cave, Våde Ovn.
You have to experience Hammershus on a quiet, sunny summer evening when the sun sends its rays over the turquoise lagoon, wreathed by the green wooded rocky slopes. Yachtsmen and some summer guests are enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The fantastic medieval castle ruins Hammershus top the slopes behind the harbour. Now, it is summer in Bornholm!
On Moseløkken Quarry Museum, you can sense and understand the hard realities of life for the natives of Bornholm. This is a working museum, where you still work according to old methods. The museum is situated opposite the harbour Hammerhavnen. The last part of the way to Moseløkken you have to go through the woods.
You find the castle ruins of Hammershus and the Hammershus exhibition about 2 km from Sandvig. An special experience!
