Looking at Tambor pueblo's gravel roads and dark, volcanic silvery-gray beach, you'd never guess it has such an extravagant past. Temporarily abandoning its humble beginnings as a quiet little fishing village, Tambor became somewhat of a mecca for resort-hoppers with the construction of several luxury hotels just outside the center in the early 90s. A few years later, Tambor gained international fame as the site of the popular American reality program Temptation Island 2. These days, however, the long crescent-shaped bay retains enough of its small-town charm, palm tree-enhanced tropical atmosphere, and luxurious resorts to attract dozens of ticos, off-the-beaten-track budget travelers, retired foreigners, and even a few whales that swim by during their migration along the coast.
