Tourist Information about Tierradentro

The name of this region, since the Spanish Conquest, reflects the geographic caracteristics of this territory between the tall mountains of the central range. Tierradentro, located in the state of Cauca, reflects the existence of pre-Colombian cultures that left behind impressive funerary architecture. Their ultimate artistic expression was in subterranean tombs, some of them deeper than seven meters underground and decorated inside with geometric designs in red and black on white and with bas relief anthropomorphic figures. The archeological zone is presently inhabited largely by the Paeces Indians, and cover the area surrounding the village of San Andrés de Pisimbalá. The most typical of the tombs are found in the Loma de Segovia, the Alto del Duende, the Tablón, The Alto de San Andrés and the Loma del Aguacate. Here you can also visit the museum where are kept the ceramic burial urns found in the interiors of the tombs as well as artifacts and utensils which illustrate the cultural environment of the Paez Indian community.
