Situated on a strategic point at the Saintes Channel, where Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea melt together, this village and the Royal Fortress had been established in 1635 by Olive du Plessis after a massacre of Carib Indians. After the edification of the Delgrès Fortress in Basse-Terre, this defense edifice had been renamed Vieux-Fort (Old Fortress). Nowadays the village, spreading out on the hillside and offering a breathtaking panoramic view, is called this name while the fortress' name is Fort Olive.
